Esq., Chief Attorney/Executive Director - Karen A. Riley joined the
Children's Rights Society as Chief Attorney/Executive Director in March
of 2007. She oversees both the Attorney for the Child and the Education
Law and Advocacy program "Project SPEAK". In 2006, Ms. Riley
was appointed by the NYS Governor to serve as an interim County Court
Judge in Rockland County. Previously, she was employed at the Rockland
County District Attorney's Office from 1996 to 2006, where she served in
various capacities, including Supervisor of the Sex Crimes and Child
Abuse Unit. Ms. Riley previously lectured at the Rockland County Police
Academy. She is a certified trainer of Forensic Interviewing through the
NYS Child Advocacy Resource Center. In 2007, she was an Adjunct
Professor in the Criminal Justice Department of Dominican College. She
has also lectured at various Continuing Legal Education Courses on
topics such as Juvenile Justice and Domestic Violence. In 2011, Ms.
Riley received the "Outstanding Public Interest Lawyer of the
Year" award from the Orange-Sullivan chapter of the New York State
Women's Bar Association. Ms. Riley is currently the Acting Village
Justice in Airmont, New York, and was formerly the Acting Village
Justice in Hillburn, New York from 2010 to 2014. She holds a B.S. in
Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University and a J.D. from
Pace University Law School.
Horaz, Esq., Staff Attorney - Ms. Horaz joined the
Children's Rights Society in 2005. She is a graduate of SUNY Binghamton
and the Buffalo School of Law. She has served on the Board of Directors
for the Junior League of Orange County. She is a past recipient of the
"Outstanding Young Lawyer" award from the Orange-Sullivan
Chapter of the NYS Women's Bar Association. She was named an
"Orange County Rising Star" and is a graduate of the
Leadership Orange Class of 2009.
Esq., Staff Attorney - Mr. Williams has been a Staff Attorney with the
Children's Rights Society since 2006. He was previously a Law Guardian
with The Children's Law Center in the Bronx from 2002 to 2005. From 1997
to 2001, Mr. Williams was an Assistant Attorney General in Saipan, MP.
He was employed from 1990 to 1997 as an Assistant County Attorney in the
Bronx specializing in the prosecution of Narcotics cases. Mr. Williams
holds a degree in Pre-Law and Busness from Oral Roberts University, and
a J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law.
Esq., Staff Attorney - Ms. Appel Kaplan joined the Children's Rights
Society as a Staff Attorney in 2008. Previously, she was an Associate
with the firm Larkin, Axelrod, Ingrassia and Tetenbaum from 2007 to
2008. Ms. Appel Kaplan served as an interim Court Attorney for the
Honorable Lori Currier-Woods in the Orange County Family Court in
2006-2007. Ms. Appel Kaplan was employed as legal counsel for the New
York City Administration of Children's Services from 2001 to 2006. She
holds a B.A. from University of Florida and a J.D. from Benjamin Cardozo
School of Law. Ms. Appel Kaplan is currently on the Board of Directors
for Nana's House Child Care Center, and was previously a member of the
Board of Directors for the YMCA of Middletown, New York. She is admitted
to the NYS Bar and the NJ Bar.
Esq., Staff Attorney - Victor Guzman has been with the Children's Rights
Society since 2011. Previously, he was a solo practitioner in Newburgh,
New York from 2003 to 2011. Mr. Guzman was a Senior Associate for Drake,
Sommers, Loeb, Tarshis and Catania, an Associate for Oherstein &
Brown, and Assistant Corporate Counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance
Company. Mr. Guzman served as an Assistant District Attorney in Kings
County from 1996-1997. He holds a BA from Brooklyn College and a J.D.
from Brigham Young University Law School. He is fluent in Spanish.
Esq., Staff Attorney - Ms. Antonelli joined the Children's Rights
Society in 2013. She was previously in private practice handling Family
Court matters from 2006 to 2013. Ms. Antonelli was a Senior Associate at
Bonacic, Krahulik & Associates from 2006 to 2008, and a Senior
Associate with Greenwald Law Offices from 2005 to 2006. Previously, she
was employed by AON Risk Services and AIG Corporation as an attorney.
She holds a B.B.A. from Pace University and a J.D. from St. John's Law
School. Ms. Antonelli is admitted to the New York and Federal Bar. She
speaks conversational Spanish.
Esq., Staff Attorney -
Paltrowitz joined the Children’s Rights Society team in 2014.
He was an associate attorney in the litigation department at King
& Spalding in NYC from 2008-2010, a staff attorney representing
matrimonial and family law at Greenwald Law Offices in Chester, NY from
2010-2013 and from 2013-2014 a staff attorney practicing family law at
Barbara J. Strauss Law Offices. He
holds a B.S. from Skidmore College and his J.D. from Boston University
School of Law.
